Intros can be so awkward!

“One small step for man, one giant leap for Mankind”, Neil Armstrong (1969)

Once you’ve done the hard part to find the right coaching support, the next step is to contact that support to say… hi, errm, I saw your profile online, I think I need some help, errm ahhh, ohhh. Professional career coaches are generally used to this and trained to help people through the first steps of contact but the first time is always the most awkward as they say.

In today’s world, the phone is the least important application of a phone. It’s been replaced by whatsapp, texts and email. We get that, evolution and all. But it has made people less likely to pick up the phone and move their vocal chords.

The late Steve Jobs of Apple fame once quoted  “there’s a temptation in our networked age to think that ideas can be developed by email and iChat. That’s crazy. Creativity comes from spontaneous meetings, from random discussions.”

Why don’t we call people anymore?

Time, basically. It started with the millennial generation (not bashing, just saying) . Making a call is not as efficient in receiving information as say searching Google or asking Twitter for it. A call can result in over lengthy conversations. This is combined with “conflict avoidance”   when calling someone, there is a chance they may have something to say that you don’t like or expected and is harder to quickly move on.

How should you engage with a Career Coach?

Traditionally you would call them up and book a first face to face appointment and go through a bunch of preliminary questions, processes, data protection, health and safety etc. But sometimes there is a trick being missed. There is no opportunity to really get under the skin of the coach before signing up, asking lots of questions so you can be 100% sure this is the right way forward. You may have what feels like awkward questions to ask and approaching these questions via the phone may leave you feeling anxious.

Here to Help

At MindLoaf we help you out with all of this. After you have found a solid coach whom you believe you can click with, ask us to introduce you to them, telling us the kind of questions you want answering. We’ll get them for you and put them forward to you. Once you’re happy we’ll book you in with them and follow up with any feedback you have. That’s it. Simple, no nonsense intro without the awkwardness 🙂
